Professional Photographer in Tokyo: Andy Barker

Celebrating 12 Years of Teaching Photography in Tokyo in English
Tuition is Only 30,000 Yen for Each Class!

Small, friendly classes.

Knowledgeable instructor that cares about you.

Color Photography I

This beginning class helps you develop your skills in taking exciting and well-composed photographs. Covers camera handling, shutter speeds and f/stops, depth of field, lenses, composition, filters, night photography, how to care for your equipment, and a brief history of photography. Instruction is divided into three all-day sessions with a lecture, demonstration, and visual presentation followed by a field trip. The fourth session is a lecture and visual presentation. Critiques of the pictures you've taken on the field trips are held each week. The 30,000-yen tuition fee covers a total of 21 hours of instruction. In addition, there is a 3,000-yen charge for color copies of the extensive class notes and approx. 4,000 yen to cover the instructor's train and subways fees. Also, before class begins, you are required to purchase the textbook KAMAKURA, the instructor's photography book, for 2,100 yen at one of the bookstores listed on the "Extras" page of this website.

Required equipment: Digital or film SLR camera with wideangle-to-telephoto zoom lens, plus tripod and wired remote switch/cable release for camera. Note: If you don't have all these items, the instructor will make recommendations and assist you in their purchase.

The next class will meet on
Sunday, September 12 (10AM-5PM), September 19 (9AM-4PM), September 26 (2-9PM), and October 3 (10AM-1PM) to be held in Tokyo at one or more students' place of residence. Please use the link at the bottom of this page, if you're interested in taking this class.

Color Photography II

Take the next step upward in honing your photographic vision. Units of study in this advanced class teach you how to give a feeling of movement to your pictures using the techniques of stop action, panning, and motion blur, the proper way to get the correct exposure in difficult lighting situations, how to take "candid" shots of people at night in available light and with electronic flash, and detailed instruction in setting up studio lighting for shooting portraits. You will also study the life and work of world-famous photographers. The first three sessions are all-day with a lecture, demonstration, and visual presentation followed by a field trip or studio workshop. The fourth session is a lecture and visual presentation. At the end of each session, the pictures you've taken during the previous week's field trip are critiqued. Tuition for the 21 hours of instruction is only 30,000 yen, plus there is a 3,000-yen fee for color copies of the comprehensive class notes and approx. 4,000 yen for the instructor's commuting expenses. Prior to class, you are required to buy KAMAKURA, the instructor's photo book, which is used as the textbook, for 2,100 yen at a bookstore listed on the "Extras" page.

Required equipment: Digital or film SLR camera with wideangle-to-telephoto zoom lens, telephoto zoom lens, tripod and wired remote switch/cable release for camera, 8X neutral density (ND) filter, and separate electronic flash. Photoshop software is highly recommended, but not mandatory.

The next class will meet on
Sunday, October 10 (9AM-4PM), October 17 (1-8PM), October 24 (10AM-5PM), and October 31 (10AM-1PM) at one or more students' place of residence. Please use the link at the bottom of this page to reserve a space in this class.

About the Instructor

Hello, I'm Andy Barker and I have 30 years experience as a professional photographer. My pictures have been published internationally in calendars, posters, books, magazines, postcards, product catalogs, telephone cards, package designs, jigsaw puzzles, and online greeting cards. Companies using my photos include NHK, Honda, NTT (Nihon Telephone & Telegraph), Canon, Nikon, Fuji Film, Pioneer, Northwest Airlines, Reader's Digest, and Tokyu Department Store to name a few.

An avid photographer since the age of 18, I received a Master's Degree in Art and Photography from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the USA and have lived in Japan for a total of 20+ years. Before opening photospace b, I taught photography for two years at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in Florida and worked as a free-lance sports and architectural photographer for ten years in Bellingham and Seattle, Washington.

My work is represented by the largest stock photo agency in Japan, Amana Images. I participated in a group photo exhibition at the Canon Salon in Ginza, Tokyo and had a one-man show, "Images of Japan," in Fort Lauderdale. In 2005, I had a small exhibition at the Cafe.Kina in Zushi. To view these pictures: Summer Festival in Zushi
Most recently, I published my own book of photographs on Kamakura, the ancient capital of Japan. To see sample pages from this book, go to the "Extras" page.
